August 12, 2014 Acadia National Park

Tuesday August 12, 2014

OOhh!  My paternal human is getting dressed!  I know he will let me out now.  ME-OUT!

Like I have said, hate the RV park, love the morning walk.  No fallout on either of us from our round of golf yesterday.  Spouse is on the mend!  Today is getaway day and we can't get out of here fast enough.  I had my walk, and we readied Hannah and we were out by 8am.  Buh bye!  Since we were in Boston, people have been telling us to go to Acadia National Park, near Bar Harbor.  So, with that many recommendations, that is where we will go next.

North we head up I295, then to I95.  Rudy lets out 3 sharp meows.  Huh?  Oh no.  We better get him into Hannah.  We got him inside, then drove a couple of miles before we stopped.  He didn't use the litter box, so he probably threw up under our be or something!  Not sure what that was all about but he was better afterwards and nothing smelled in Hannah!

We stop for breakfast.  It is not the Cracker Barrel.  It is a mom and pop place, please don't let me down.  So far we are 0-2 for places like this.  And it was gooooood!  Yesss!

In Augusta, we head east on hwy 3 through the beautiful rural countryside.  Rolling hills, trees, lakes, rivers and streams guide us along.  We had been listening to a tribute to Robin Williams but it got too depressing, so we switched stations.  As we come down the hill towards the town of Belfast, you can see the rugged Maine coastline.   Turning on hwy 1, we have eye candy views of New England towns, and the white church steeples all along the water.

We then turn back on to hwy 3 heading to the Mount Desert Island, where the town of Bar Harbor lives next to Acadia National Park.  Here is where the battle begins.  Where to stay...  we know we don't want ANYTHING like Bayley's in Portland.  But the entire New England and French Canadian population are on vacation, so RV spots will be at a premium.  Do we try and get one all the way in the park, or do we get one outside the park?  Most of this is first come first served.  If there are spots that can be reserved, we know they will be gone.  The first couple of parks we passed looked way too RV'ish to us.  Then we came to Bar Harbor Campground.  Based on the brochure we had of the area, this is the more quaint (which translates to 'no full services') campground.  We turned in and they let us check it out before we paid.  There were very few spots available - none with full hook-ups.  But we found a nice woodsy spot with electric and water (no sewer, but we have a holding tank and we are also real close to the bathroom) so we took it.  Oh, and it doesn't have cable TV (gasp, as if we really care).  Turns out that was a smart thing to do, as there is a 6 hour wait for the available campsites within the park right now.  Sorry, not how we want to spend our time.

So, we disconnect and venture into Acadia.  First stop is Cadillac Mountain.  It is roughly 1600 feet high (like that would scare those of us that have been to the Sierras or Rockies).  It is pink granite and there are 360 views of the ocean and all the islands as well as the mountains behind.  It is absolutely breathtaking.  We hike around (Spouse is doing ok).  It is kind of cool actually.  We then checked out more of the island.  It is pretty, but it is Maine pretty as opposed to Grand Teton or Yosemite pretty.

Tomorrow, we have the day to explore, and maybe indulge in some more lobster.  Hey, we are here, it is now and there is lobster for less than a burrito dinner would cost back home!  Ok, we could do twin lobsters for $24.99.  Or any other shellfish or non-shellfish for that matter! Can we contain ourselves...
