May 9, 2021 Intracoastal crossing

Woke up to winds, and somewhat cloudy skies.  On my walk, I took three things I ended up NOT needing… an umbrella, a sun visor and sunglasses.  Because of the cloud cover, it was comfortable to walk – not too hot or humid.  Spouse started with me. A cacophony of cooing from a robust colony of doves serenaded us as we walked through the RV park.  We walked up the street and past Sea World.  When Spouse left me, I continued on and walked through a few of the neighborhoods.  I wanted my weed whacker!

We readied Hannah for her next adventure.  Following the freeways around San Antonio, we got on I37 south.  We prefer to navigate off of interstates when possible, but there were not many options.  We left the city behind onto the flatlands.  It is green, with trees, ranches and farms.  A cow here, goat there.  Instead of deer roadkill, we see a few armadillos.

We are headed towards Corpus Christi.  I checked availability at the state campground at Mustang Island and it is totally booked, but we decided to try it anyway.  We followed the freeways across the intracoastal waterway, onto Padre Island, then turn left for the 5 mile drive to the state park.  We asked the guy not to laugh when we asked for 3 days… he tried not to but said it was unlikely…  then he smiled!  He said there was a site!  We snatched it up.  We backed into our space with a field of native grasses as our view.  The grasses cover the dunes, then the gulf just a heartbeat away.  This truly was good fortune!

We normally do not prefer your larger private RV parks.  They are more expensive for amenities we normally do not use.  We prefer smaller RV parks, or state and national RV parks.  They have fewer people crammed in to larger spaces.  This is no exception.  We have electricity and water, but not sewer hookups.  There is a dump station for when we leave where we can do the deed.

After we set Hannah up, we took a drive on the beach.  It is mother’s day and quite a lot of activity.  But unlike California, you can drive on the beach.  I now know why Dr. Nowzardan of my 600 pound life set up a practice in Houston... Plenty of clientele…  I feel sooo skinny and I haven’t felt a hunger pang since we left!  We then headed to the national seashore on Padre Island.

These islands are quite long, but only a mile or two wide.  There are water inlets here and there and it is all low ground.  I am sure it is quite interesting when hurricanes hit!  On Padre Island, homes are built on stilts for high water.  Many have their own boat slips.  As we continue south, we see fields of hummocks and native grasses.

At the visitor center, we found out the Ridley turtles are nesting, so we are thinking of going back tomorrow, when it is less crowded to see if we can catch any action.  There is 70 miles of beach we can ride.  We thought about bringing Hannah, but…  wind and sand…  Naw… not a good idea.
